The aircraft belonging to unit 1.(F)/22 (Aufklärungsgruppe 22) took off from Kjevik, Kristiansand in the evening of 23.09.44 heading north. Shortly after takeoff the crew supposedly reported engine failure and tried to get back to the airfield. Unfortunately they were not high enough, so they crashed into pine trees and rock at 17:20 hours, killing the entire crew and scattering debris over a large area.
The plane was piloted by Uffz. Hermann Overrath. Three other crew members were also killed in the crash.
The D-1 model was a long-range photo-reconnaissance variant based on Ju 88 A-4.
The aircraft had Werk Nr. 430557 and markings 4N+CH. It had former service with 2.(F)/11 and Westa 5, and was known with 1.(F)/22 already by 31.05.44
